Compression
How do graduated compression socks work?
Graduated compression socks work by applying pressure on the veins in your legs to improve the flow of blood back to your heart. The term “graduated” describes a pressure pattern that is greatest at your ankle and “gradually” decreases as it moves up the leg.
What are the benefits of graduated compression?
Compression socks can reduce swelling and blood pooling, increase circulation, ease leg fatigue, and help prevent issues like varicose veins or blood clots (DVT), especially during pregnancy, on long flights, or if you spend a lot of time sitting or standing.
What does "mmHg" mean?
"mmHg" stands for millimeters of mercury, which is a unit of pressure measurement. In compression socks, it indicates the amount of pressure the socks apply to your legs. Typically expressed as a range, the lower the range, the lighter the compression. Mode’s Everyday Knee-High Sock is 15-20 mmHg, considered mild to moderate compression, making it great for everyday wear, travel, and managing mild swelling or fatigue.
How long should I wear compression socks?
You can wear them throughout the day, particularly during long periods of standing, sitting, or physical activity. Just take them off before bed. For managing swelling, it is best to put on as closely after waking up as possible. Though, for personalized advice, we recommend consulting your doctor.
Who should wear compression socks?
Everyone can benefit from wearing compression socks, but they are especially helpful for people who stand or sit for long periods, frequent travelers, athletes, pregnant women, and those managing conditions like varicose veins, POTs or lymphedema.
Can I wear compression socks if I’m pregnant?
Absolutely. Compression socks are recommended during pregnancy to help manage the increased fluid and blood flow women often experience, which can lead to swelling, fatigue and discomfort.

Fabric, Fit & Function
What are Mode Compression socks made of?
Mode Compression socks are made of:
- Combed Cotton: extra long natural fibers making them stronger, softer and more durable than traditional cotton.
- Nylon and LYCRA® (Spandex): the materials which make it possible for compression socks to maintain their shape even after extreme stretching.
Are Mode Compression socks hypoallergenic?
Mode Compression socks are made from a blend of Nylon, Combed Cotton, and LYCRA® (Spandex). While these materials are common in medical-grade compression garments, they may not be suitable for individuals with specific fiber allergies or sensitivities. If you have a history of skin reactions to synthetic textiles like Nylon or Spandex, we recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before use.
Are Mode Compression socks medical-grade?
Medical-grade compression usually = 20 mmHg or more.
Right now, we only offer 15-20 mmHg*, so Mode Compression socks are not considered medical-grade.
Though, all Mode Compression socks are inspected and tested for accurate graduated compression at an FDA-approved facility.
*We plan to launch a 20-30 mmHg option soon and these will be considered medical-grade.
How do I know my size?
You’ll find a full size chart on each product page. Email kate@modecompression.com if you have any questions. Below you'll find some helpful tips:
- For best foot fit: Simply choose the size that matches your usual US shoe size. Size down for a snugger fit, or up for more breathing room, especially if you're new to compression.
- For best calf/cuff fit: Measure around widest part of your calf. If it measures 17" or more, we recommend choosing one of our wide-calf-friendly options.
Remember, compression socks are intended to be and feel tighter than typical socks.
Do you offer wide calf options?
Yes! We offer wide calf sizes, fitting up to a 22" calf circumference.
If the widest part of your calf measure 17" or more, we recommend choosing one of our wide-calf friendly options.
Are Mode Compression socks unisex?
Yes, Mode Compression socks are unisex. Double check the size guide on the product page before ordering to ensure the best fit. Generally our socks follow US based shoe sizes.
How long are the socks supposed to be?
The top edge of the cuff should rest about one inch, or 2-3 fingers width, below the bend of your knee. They should stay in place without rolling or bunching.
How are compression socks supposed to feel?
The right pair of compression socks should feel snug and supportive, but never painful. The amount of pressure you feel will depend on the compression strength, but our 15-20 mmHg Everyday Knee-High Socks should feel like a gentle hug for your feet and legs.
Your feet and toes should fit comfortably in the footbed. The toes should never feel cramped, the seams should never bulk at the sides and the heel should stay in place.
If your Mode Compression socks don't feel like this, please reach out to kate@modecompression.com to get it sorted. It's likely you have the wrong size.

How do I wash my Mode Compression socks?
Wash your Mode Compression socks just as you would the rest of your socks. Ideally you would machine wash and tumble dry low. Expect a little shrinkage after drying. This is normal and doesn’t mean your socks will no longer fit! Our socks are incredibly flexible and will stretch back out to fit just as the first time you wore them.
Can I put my Mode Compression socks in the dryer?
Yes, you can put your Mode Compression socks in the dryer, though we do recommend a low heat setting. Expect a little shrinkage after drying. This is normal and doesn’t mean your socks will no longer fit! Our socks are incredibly flexible and will stretch back out to fit just as the first time you wore them.
