Here's the thing nobody tells you: postpartum swelling can get worse before it gets better.
After birth, your body starts releasing the extra fluid it's been carrying, but it doesn't do it overnight. For many women, the first few days postpartum are the swelliest of the whole pregnancy. Add to that the fact that you're less mobile, your hormones are shifting, and (if you had a C-section) your DVT risk is at its highest.
Compression socks are one of the easiest tools for the postpartum recovery period. Most hospital gowns and recovery loungewear get all the attention, but what's on your feet and legs matters too.
Why postpartum compression helps
The Mode Difference
Made with cotton.
Gentle, breathable, soft on sensitive postpartum skin. Cotton-wrapped yarn means cotton is what touches your body, not synthetic fabric.
Easier to put on.
Graduated design and a shaped cuff make these easier to manage when mobility is limited. You've got enough going on.
No marks at the cuff.
The cuff stays put without digging in on swollen legs. No constriction, no marks, no discomfort at the top.
Wide-calf friendly.
Swelling changes your sizing. Mode offers wide-calf options for every stage, sized independently by foot size, not assumed proportions.
Kate wore compression socks through her pregnancy. She built them. She gets it.
Kate, Mode's founder, developed and tested these socks while she was pregnant. She has lymphedema, which means she needed compression through the whole pregnancy, and she could evaluate every pair from the perspective of someone who needed them to actually work.
She built Mode because nothing she tried was comfortable enough, breathable enough, or easy enough to put on while pregnant. These are the socks she wore through postpartum recovery too. She hopes they make your recovery a little easier.
Questions? We've got answers.
Should I wear compression socks after giving birth?
Yes, generally recommended, especially in the first 6 weeks. Your body is releasing extra fluid, your circulation is adjusting, and your mobility is often reduced. Compression helps with all of it. Ask your OB or midwife about their recommendation for your situation.
How soon after giving birth can I wear compression socks?
Many hospitals put compression stockings on patients immediately after delivery, especially after C-sections. Once you're home, you can wear them from day one. If you had a C-section or are at elevated risk, your care team may have specific guidance.
What about after a C-section?
DVT risk is higher after C-sections due to longer recovery time and reduced mobility. Many OBs specifically recommend compression socks post-C-section. Mode's 15-20 mmHg is a good starting point, but confirm with your doctor what level they recommend for your situation.
How long do I need to wear compression socks postpartum?
Most recommendations are for 6 weeks postpartum, which is the highest-risk period. Some women continue longer while their bodies are still adjusting. Your care provider is the best guide here.
Can I wear them at night?
General guidance is to wear compression during the day when you're upright and remove them to sleep. That said, if your doctor recommends otherwise based on your specific situation, follow their advice.
Do you have wide-calf options for postpartum swelling?
Yes. Mode wide-calf sizes are based on shoe size independently, so even if swelling has changed your calf size temporarily, we have options that fit. Wide-calf S/M/L based on foot size, not assumed proportions.
Recovery takes time. Your socks shouldn't make it harder.
